Synergy: Connecting Teachers

Synergy: Connecting Teachers

On Monday 20/06/2011 the English Teachers’ Union of Serres (TEUM) and the State school advisor Mr Skenderis jointly organised an educational meeting under the title “Synergy: connecting teachers”. The aim was to enable English language teachers working in primary and secondary education in the region of Serres to share good classroom practices, disseminate their work, exchange thoughts and reflect on their experiences and teaching methods. The meeting was held at the premises of the 2nd EPAL of Serres.

The event started with the presentation of the Union’s Blog, a meeting point for our members, a useful tool for self development. The phrase “Connect, Communicate, Collaborate” best describes its goals and content. Ms Theodora Gkeniou, who made the presentation, put emphasis on the fact that this space can provide English language teachers with opportunities to build their own Personal Learning Networks and learn autonomously. The blog contains samples of work produced by our members, stimulating ideas on new projects, links to other educational sites and journals as well as announcements of forthcoming events relevant to ELT. It can be accessed at the following address: http://englishteachersinserres.blogspot.com/

The second presentation was given by Ms Mina Poulidou, from Proti High school. Her project “Bringing Poetry into the Classroom: embellishing the routine” originated by her love for literature and nature and targeted at motivating her students by creating a relaxed atmosphere and giving them the space and time to express themselves in a new context. Using a selection of poems, pictures and a music background (Four Seasons by Vivaldi) she encouraged them to explore their emotions, connect them to their memories and express their thoughts by producing their own poems. The overall experience was unique, as the pupils claimed.

Ms Eleni Zampaki (Alistrati High school) facilitated the session “Music..Makes me Feel”. The aim of the activity was to trace down the feelings that immerse through listening to music, to prove the power music has. 10 tracks of different kinds of music were chosen and the teachers who played the role of students were asked to write down words that describe their feelings, the images that come into their mind when they listen to that particular music. Then the sheets of papers were scattered among teachers and the pieces of music were played in random order. What the participants had to do was to recognise which words were related to the particular song played. The activity described above was originally implemented into students of 3rd Grade of High School and it proved really effective.

Ms Souzanna Drampa (25th primary school of Serres) explored the use of CLIL by implementing the project “Travelling through our Solar System” with her 6th grade pupils, combining English and geography. Her intention was to maximize the children’s overall exposure to language and increase their motivation. After taking into consideration the relevant conditions and limitations, she set the objectives and carried on with the implementation. She concluded with a brief evaluation, stressing the benefits and reflecting on the difficulties encountered. She also provided supplementary material to illustrate her work.

Finally Ms Theodora Gkeniou (Lykeio of Pentapolis) gave an alternative suggestion for teaching English in Lykeio. Her school along with schools from five more countries created an international youth e-magazine as part of an e-twinning project over a 9-month period. The development of social, digital and critical thinking skills which are necessary prerequisites in the learning and work environment of the 21st century, the growing role of technology and the emergence of new genres of communication (blogs, wikis, forums etc) as well as the dominance of English as the language of the Internet has led the partners to decide to take up the specific project. To find out more about it visit http://mymagazeen.blogspot.com/

The meeting concluded with Mr Skenderis, who informed the audience about the European Language Portfolio, its functions and raison d'être. After the presentation and a brief discussion we decided that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages and that it is a useful pedagogic tool that fosters the development of all learning strategies. In his closing comments he stressed the importance of organizing such educational meetings which help teachers develop and get inspiration and urged us never to forget that “Happy teachers make happy students and happy students can learn!”

Looking Ahead to New Challenges - a report

How can teachers maintain their self-respect and gain their students’ attention and confidence? In what ways can they be helped to feel less alone? What options do we have to keep up to date with the latest advancements in teaching methodology and the subject matter knowledge? How do we keep in touch with teachers’ communities and what is the reason for doing so?

These and many more questions were addressed by the keynote speaker Mr George Vassilakis in the one-day seminar, entitled “Looking ahead to new challenges” that was held at the hospitable premises of Philippos Xenia in Serres, on Wednesday 07/09/2011. On this occasion we had the chance to meet our colleagues after the summer holidays, socialize and exchanges thoughts in view of the new school year. The meeting was completed with the professional presentations by Ms Fatsiadou and Mr Moschopoulos, of the publishing houses, Express Publications and MM Publications, who kindly agreed to sponsor this event.

Mr Vassilakis discussed the prospects of teacher development in the 21st century, starting by outlining the stages a teacher may go through in his/her career, from being a novice to becoming a respected professional, such as an institution’s manager or a teacher trainer.

However, regardless of one’s current position, the essence of being a teacher is about constant evolving perspectives. The subject matter is by its nature changing rapidly, language is a living organism and the language teacher has to keep him/herself informed. What is more, theories of language acquisition and consequently teaching methodology as well the field of education in general is changing. The latest researches should be incorporated in our approaches to teaching. The teaching context is another variable that should be considered, since the economic crisis has led many English teachers work in multiple contexts.

Mr Vassilakis thus stressed that what we should constantly be doing is DOUBT, question our practices, discuss with colleagues, evaluate, re-evaluate and reflect on our work in order to keep improving. Mere accumulation of experience, in the sense of the exact repetition of old practices does not add anything to our improvement.

In this pursuit of self-development the contribution of our colleagues is valuable and the Web is giving us the wonderful opportunity of networking and keeping in touch with teachers and field experts from all over the world. A collection of handy Web 2.0 tools were introduced and their use was explained. It cannot be denied that English teaching communities have always had better reflexes when it comes to reacting to stimuli from other countries due to the nature of their subject matter and the influences they get from abroad.

In the end, we may wonder…Why Bother? None of these translate immediately to a promotion or extra money or better working conditions! However, as years go by and we become more conscious and critical of our work, we become more able to CHOOSE. And choice has always been a fundamental characteristic of our existence both as human beings and teachers, an aspect that leads to freedom and maturity.

D.G.

“What is teacher development? Why should English language teachers invest in their own professional development? And how can teachers develop professionally in the 21st century? After reviewing the personal and professional benefits of teacher development practices, this presentation will demonstrate different ways in which teachers can implement these practices using, among others, social network tools, the internet and other types of networking. At the same time, the presentation will offer a number of practical ideas for involving learners in the process, so that they, too, take responsibility for their own development together with their teachers.”(George Vassilakis)

Primary Essentials

On the occasion of the introduction of English at Primary Level in the Greek educational system, the British Council has provided an online course addressing English teachers who are involved or interested in teaching Young Learners (approximately 5-12 years old). Several members of our Union have attended this seminar which was given over a 4-month period, from January to April 2011.

The course was structured in 6 modules containing overviews of fundamental topics in Primary ELT, namely:

  • Introduction
  • First Steps
  • Songs and Games
  • Learning Styles
  • Syllabus and Lesson Planning
  • Classroom Management.

The introductory module aimed at familiriasing the participants with e-learning practices, that is how to use the Moodle platform, how to create a personal profile and understanding the different ways of working together online.

“First Steps” explored issues such as the characteristics of children learning English at different ages, whether there is evidence that “younger is better” when it comes to language learning at school, YL’s needs and profile, teaching implications and suggested activities.

“Songs and Games” focused on the reasons why they play such a vital role in language learning, the advantages of using them and the different types available, how they can be adapted to different levels and linguistic objectives and what to avoid when using them.

“Learning Styles” considered differences among learners and different learning styles, the implications for teaching, a multi-sensory approach to teaching and how we can cater for VAK (visual, auditory and kinaesthetic) learners when practicing the language skills and teaching vocabulary.

“Syllabus and Lesson Planning” looked at how a syllabus can be produced and the different types that exist, what different approaches and methods can be used, what the differences are between syllabus and curriculum, how teachers can move on from curriculum to lesson planning and guidance for a successful lesson.

“Classroom Management”, the last module, covered a burning issue, how to ensure that classes run smoothly and disruptive behaviour is minimized. A variety of questions have been dealt with such as: what classroom management is, when and if L1 can be used, how to maintain control and discipline, what to do when the situation gets out of control, time management issues and how to establish rapport with your students.

By the end of each module a written assignment had to be sent to the course moderator on a relevant topic, either individually or in groups. A number of tools were used such as videos, forums, wikis, quizzes and reflective journals.

The dual benefits of taking this course related both to its form and content. For many participants this was their first experience of e-learning and they became familiar with this contemporary form of teacher training. Most important though, we had the chance, albeit not much time, to evolve professionally and keep up to date on the latest developments in our field of interest.

TV may hamper baby talk
A new study provides fresh evidence that television is bad for babies. It found that parents don’t talk as much to their infants when a television is turned on –even if it is just audible in the background. That might explain why exposure to television seems to hinder a child’s ability to learn language.
“Every word that is uttered to a baby is actually important,” said Dr Dimitri Christakis, lead researcher of the Seattle Children’s Research Institute, in the USA. Language acquisition starts on the first day of a child’s life. Hearing words, and interacting with caregivers, lays the foundation for language development.
The study involved 329 children between two months and four years of age. On randomly selected days, the children wore a small audio-recording device which captured everything they heard or said. An analysis of those recordings revealed that each additional hour of television exposure led to a decrease of about 770 words the child heard from an adult during the recording session.
The presence of an audible TV also put a damper on the infants, who uttered fewer words or sounds like ga-ga and goo-goo. “Some of these reductions are likely due to children being left in front of the television screen, but others likely reflect situations in which adults, though present, are distracted by the screen and are not interacting with their infant,” the researchers write in the journal Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine.
In some respects, the findings don’t seem all that surprising, Dr Christakis said in an interview, but he added that many parents are under the mistaken belief that TV viewing –especially infant-oriented DVDs– helps kids learn.
“I don’t fault parents because there has been a very aggressive marketing campaign to try to convince them that these baby DVDs are really good for their baby’s brain and can teach them all kinds of things,” he said. However, the results of his study clearly show that “when the TV is on, parents and children are interacting less, not more,” he said, stressing that kids learn best through interaction. “The richness of the child’s language environment is deceased by the presence of an audible TV,” he said. “Television displaces talk –children talk less and are spoken to less.”
